SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Winter Series - Jane Monheit Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes: 6:30pm & 8:45pm \nJane Monheit is a jazz and adult contemporary vocalist with a deep passion for the Great American Songbook. With many highly acclaimed solo albums\, countless awards and accolades\, and over two decades of international touring experience\, Jane has not only been an extremely successful bandleader\, but has had the privilege of making music with some of the greatest musicians\, arrangers\, and producers in jazz. \nDuring her childhood\, Jane studied woodwinds and piano\, spent a decade performing in award winning choirs\, and participated in community theater on Long Island. Throughout all of this\, her focus remained on jazz\, especially interpretation of the Songbook. At the age of 20\, during her senior year at the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music\, Jane placed second in the Thelonious Monk Competition\, now known as the Hancock Competition. This led to an incredible career trajectory\, catapulting Jane into the jazz stratosphere nearly overnight. \nBy 22\, Jane was working with legends such as Tommy Flanagan\, Ron Carter\, and Kenny Barron\, recording her first albums\, and touring the planet. This led to collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard\, Ivan Lins\, Tom Harrell\, John Pizzarelli\, Christian McBride\, Vince Mendoza\, Jorge Calandrelli\, and many more. Countless television appearances followed\, including David Letterman\, Conan O’Brien\, CBS Sunday Morning\, Good Morning America\, The Tonight Show\, The View\, and many popular international talk shows. Several successful film soundtracks have also included Jane’s music\, including Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow and Never Let Me Go. \nAfter more than twenty years\, twelve studio albums and countless recorded guest appearances\, Jane has continued to tour the world nearly nonstop\, including playing iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, and headlining at nearly every legendary jazz club on the planet\, most notably NY stalwarts such as the Village Vanguard and Birdland. In addition to touring\, she also writes English lyrics for Ivan Lins\, and uses the knowledge and experience she has gained both at Manhattan School Of Music and on the legendary bandstands of the world to educate and uplift students worldwide. Jane resides in Los Angeles with her husband of over twenty years\, drummer Rick Montalbano\, and their son.

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Jesus Molina
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes 6:30pm & 8:45pm @ Aspen Art Museum Rooftop \nA world-class jazz pianist\, vocalist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and successful online piano tutor\, 27-year-old Jesus Molina is a one-man force of nature\, a Berklee College of Music grad and Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation award winner who has already carved out an impressive career.  His brand-new instrumental album Selah – a blessing meaning “praise” or “lift up” – perfectly captures his spiritual approach to music. \nThe second oldest of four children born in Sincelejo\, Colombia\, on the northern coast near Cartagena\, Jesus Molina’s parents were both lawyers\, while he turned out to be the only one with musical talent in his family. He was encouraged to pursue that passion by his grandmother\, who gifted him a Casio keyboard when he was four years old\, and he proceeded to plunk out the notes to “Happy Birthday\,” to the encouragement of his mom\, eventually teaching himself to play the saxophone before taking up the piano again as a teenager. \nMolina had never been to America when he first flew into Boston in May 2016 to attend Berklee\, earning tuition as part of the Latin Grammy’s Juan Luis Guerra Scholarship\, taking ESL classes to learn to speak English along the way. “When they asked me about my dreams in music\, all I could say was\, ‘I Jesus Colombia… I love orange juice.’ But what I meant was\, I want to be the next Chick Corea.” \nAnd while his technical ability has led him to a role as an online Zoom tutor with a following of 25\,000 students\, Molina’s music is anything but sterile noodling\, with an appreciation for accessible pop melodies which originally attracted him to the sax stylings of Dave Koz and Kenny G. But his life was forever changed viewing a video of Canadian piano jazz great Oscar Peterson\, known as “the King of inside swing\,” dubbed “the Maharaja of the keyboard\,” by no less than Duke Ellington. \nYou can hear those influences on Selah\, but that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Molina’s crossover potential\, with planned future albums devoted to pop vocal in Spanish and English\, making him a true triple-threat. \nAfter several previous recordings\, including Agape (God’s Love) and Departing\, featuring covers of classic jazz standards such as Chick Corea’s “Spain” or Dizzy Gillespie’s “Night in Tunisia\,” along with several originals\, Molina is looking forward to performing the newly penned Selah songs in front of live audiences. “I love playing for people\,” added Molina. “That’s still my favorite part of making music.” \nSelah is a musical blessing\, a sacred symphony to transport this troubled world into a more joyful space. The world is about to discover Jesus Molina for themselves. \n

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Judith Owen & The Gentlemen Callers
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes 6:30pm & 8:45pm @ Aspen Art Museum Rooftop \nJudith Owen\, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock\, pop\, classical\, jazz\, blues\, and musical theatre\, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. \nBorn into an overtly musical Welsh family\, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music\, ballet\, theatre\, and the fine arts.  Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. \nJudith’s new live album “Comes Alive” follows on the heels of her hugely successful 2022 album “Come On & Get It” (over 3.2 Million album streams and more than a million YouTube views).  “Judith Owen Comes Alive” – released worldwide in early spring 2024 – features 16 tracks recorded live over a weeklong residency in Bern\, Switzerland at the legendary Marians Jazzroom in January of this year. \nRevisiting some of the jewels featured on “Come On & Get It” with brand new live interpretations of Lady Be Good\, Teach Me Tonight\, Down With Love\, Skylark\, and Fever to name a few new tracks\, Judith once again looks to the music of the unsung “badass” ladies of Jazz and Blues. \nOwen conceived of the project as a result of her childhood fascination with the Jazz music of some of the so-called “pioneering but oft forgotten women” of the Jazz and Blues world including Julia Lee\, Blossom Dearie and Nellie Lutcher – who she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father’s record collection alongside the likes of Oscar Peterson and Jelly Roll Morton. Captivated and enchanted by these “Unapologetic” chanteuses of the 40’s/50’s\, who were singing about sex – and enjoying it at a time when women were meant to sing about romance – Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The result is a joyful\, uplifting\, and empowering project; a throw-back with a fresh feel complete with a look and style that speaks of all those delectable\, hugely entertaining women who broke the glass ceiling with their stiletto heels and were ever so proud of it! \nThe release of “Judith Owen Comes Alive” is accompanied by tour dates across the US and Europe with headline shows in New Orleans\, New York City\, Nashville\, Oakland and Los Angeles before heading to Paris and Milan in June\, and returning to London in July. A string of festival dates in Europe and the US round up the summer.

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Naturally 7
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes 6:30pm & 8:45pm @ Aspen Art Museum Rooftop – Early show is SOLD OUT. Call the office at 970-920-4996 to be added to the waitlist. \nIn Memory of Judith Steinberg \nCertain experiences burn themselves in your memory from the very first encounter. The jaw-dropping audio pyrotechnics that Naturally 7 put on display every night absolutely belong in that category. “A capella group” so vastly underplays what they create onstage that they had to coin a phrase – “Vocal Play” – to more accurately depict what they do. Naturally 7 is more than a tightly orchestrated collection of great singers. They transform their voices into actual human instruments\, effortlessly producing music of any genre. Their vocal choreography is so perfectly interwoven that they compelled the musical maestro himself\, Quincy Jones\, to declare them “The best a cappella group in the world!” Their sonic mastery was on full display in a series of unforgettable performances on “The World’s Best” TV show\, which premiered on CBS immediately following Super Bowl LIII. Hosted by comedian and “Car Karaoke” collaborator\, James Corden\, Naturally 7 reigned supreme as the world’s “Best Group”\, and cemented their singular status among the planet’s musical elite. \nThis was only icing on the cake of a still-vibrant 20-year career\, which includes 3 world tours – nearly 500 shows – with the incomparable Michael Bublé\, shared billing with global phenomenon Coldplay – including a sold-out show at the Barclays Center – and owned the spotlight in a pair of national Cheerios commercials. In addition to Bublé\, Naturally 7 has shared the stage with numerous icons\, including Stevie Wonder\, Diana Ross\, Quincy Jones\, Sarah Connor\, Lionel Richie\, Ludacris\, The Roots\, and more. Counted among their world-famous fans are President Barack Obama\, Will.I.Am.\, Ellen DeGeneres\, Craig Ferguson\, Bill and Melinda Gates\, Jay Leno\, Allan Titchmarsh\, Mo’Nique\, Jools Holland\, and Arsenio Hall\, along with countless others. \nThrough the years\, the band continues to wow crowds around the world with their amazing stage show\, and astonishing vocal theatrics\, leaving audiences both speechless\, and eager to mimic their favorite moment of the one-of-a-kind experience. For the members of Naturally 7 – “Ricky“ Lee Ricardo Cort\, Rod Eldridge\, Kelvin  “Kelz“ Mitchell\, Sean Simmonds\, Dwight Stewart\, Roger Thomas\, and Warren Thomas – it’s a privilege to do what they love and bring so much joy to the hearts of their fans each and every night. Naturally 7 still tours and performs more than 150 shows a year. \n

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Kaleta & Super Yamba Band
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes 6:30pm & 8:45pm @ Aspen Art Museum Rooftop \nBrooklyn’s Kaleta & Super Yamba Band are fronted by Afrobeat and Juju veteran Leon Ligan-Majek a.k.a. Kaleta. The singer/guitarist from the West African country of Benin Republic lived his adolescent life in Lagos\, Nigeria where Afrobeat was born. Kaleta’s guitar chops earned him decades of touring and recording with Fela Kuti\, King Sunny Ade\, Lauryn Hill and more. \nKaleta got his start in the late 70s performing in church and was soon after picked up by iconic Juju master and world music pioneer King Sunny Ade. A few years later Fela Kuti came calling. Kaleta would go on to tour the world playing guitar for the King of Afrobeat in his storied band Egypt 80 through the 1980s and into the 1990s. Now based in New York City\, Kaleta has been leading Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album ‘Mèdaho\,’ which was released by California indie label Ubiquity Records\, draws on the group’s shared reverence for the raw\, psychedelic sounds that captivated Kaleta as a music loving kid in 1970s Benin. Mèdaho means “big brother”\, “elder” or “teacher” and is dedicated to Kaleta’s late brother Ligan-Ozavino Pascal who introduced him to funk and soul music at a very early age. The album was included on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of Summer 2019” list and two of the songs were chosen for the ABC/Hulu series High Fidelity staring Zoe Kravitz. \nKaleta and his band have also erupted onto the stages and video screens of major music festivals and music publications across the US. They performed at the historic Apollo Theatre in 2019. They even prompted Action Bronson to stop his own show on VICELAND TV just so he could hear more Yamba. They also performed on Adult Swim’s Fishcenter Live show in 2019. In 2017 they rocked Paste Magazine’s Emerging Music Festival in NYC and after that performance Afropop Worldwide fell in love with Kaleta\, saying “his James Brown grunts have got to be some of the best in the business!” \n

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Monty Alexander’s Harlem Kingston Express
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes 6:30pm & 8:45pm @ Aspen Art Museum Rooftop \nNearly sixty five years after he moved to the United States from Kingston\, Jamaica\, his hometown\, Grammy ® nominated pianist Monty Alexander is a Jamaican-American classic\, touring the world relentlessly with various projects\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. His spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making\, effervescent grooves\, sophisticated voicings\, a romantic spirit\, and a consistent predisposition\, as Alexander accurately states\, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” \nDocumented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing)\, the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and in 2022 conferred on him the national honor Order of Jamaica for “Sterling Contributions to the Promotions of Jamaican Music and the Jazz Genre Interpretations Globally”. In further recognition of his accomplishments\, the University of The West Indies bestowed him with an honorary doctorate (DLitt). \nJune 6\, 2024\, marked the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings. It’s also the day Monty Alexander turned 80. A highly symbolic historical concordance which the great musician naturally embraces\, since the name he was given pays homage to General Montgomery\, the famous liberator. Recorded at Studio Sextan in Paris in October 2023\, D-Day (PeeWee!) contains iconic compositions written in wartime as well as eight original tracks. \n“I love Jamaica. I love America. I love them both together more than each one separately. I inhabit the rhythmic aspect of both things. I can’t explain why. I do it naturally and joyfully. I am confident and proud and privileged to say that I come from a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic thing. The slogan of Jamaica is like America’s ‘E Pluribus Unum\,’ ‘out of many\, one people.’”
