SUMMARY:Shelly Berg Trio “Alegria” + Rene Marie and the JAS Academy Afro-Caribbean Big Band led by Etienne Charles: “Tribute to Harry Belafonte”
DESCRIPTION:René Marie is a very rare artist. A modern vocal icon\, her unique artistry has been recognized with multiple domestic and international awards including two GRAMMY Award nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album. A lyricist/composer/arranger/playwright/actress/educator/speaker / and social justice activist\, René is an Americana roots artist with jazz improvisational chops. \nTrinidad-born Etienne Charles is a performer\, composer\, and storyteller\, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them. His lush trumpet sound\, varied compositional textures\, and pulsating percussive grooves enable him to invoke trance\, soothing\, and exciting listeners while referencing touchy and sometimes controversial subjects in his music. \nShelly Berg Trio presents Alegria: Think of the most magical moment you can remember while listening to music. Was it a live performance\, something on the radio as a child\, or even something you may have performed yourself? Just take a minute now to reflect on that. What you may be feeling when remembering that moment is Alegría which means happiness or joy in Spanish. \nMusic has the power to transform people. When music is at its best\, it can create a deep connection between performers and listeners. These moments can even be the catalyst for the trajectory of a person’s life. In my case\, I remember my childhood being filled with moments of bliss while listening to\, and later playing music. These moments put me on the path towards a beautiful life in music and now I would like to share them with you. Welcome to the Alegría project. Together we will explore the moments of boundless joy that we all experience through music. \nCarlitos Del Puerto – Born and raised in Cuba\, Carlitos is the son of the world-famous bass player Carlos Del Puerto who is a founder and original member of the Cuban super group IRAKERE\, and a distinguished professor and author of the book The True Cuban Bass adopted by Berklee College of Music. Since arriving in the United States\, Carlitos has worked with Barbra Streisand\, Bruce Springsteen\, Quincy Jones\, Herbie Hancock\, and has recorded on TV\, Film soundtracks\, and countless recordings. He was a member of Chick Corea’s band for eight years\, with whom in 2020\, he received a Grammy for the album Antidote. He also tours with recording sensation Bad Bunny. \nFrom Cuba\, Dafnis Prieto’s revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions have had a powerful impact on the Latin and Jazz music scene\, nationally and internationally. A gifted educator\, Prieto has conducted numerous master classes\, clinics\, and workshops throughout the world. He was a faculty member of Jazz Studies at NYU from 2005 to 2014\, and in 2015 became a faculty member of Frost School of Music at University of Miami. \nVocalist Rene Marie will join the twenty students selected for the JAS Academy Afro-Caribbean Big Band program for a musical celebration of the Caribbean-born legendary vocalist\, Harry Belafonte. This beautiful concert intersperses the most beloved calypso selections of Harry Belafonte with lesser-known facts about his use of music to effect social change. Each musical selection (arrangements by trumpeter Etienne Charles) is curated to engage the hearts and minds of both long-time fans of Harry Belafonte and more recent acolytes.

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Säje
DESCRIPTION:The GRAMMY® nominated vocal supergroup\, säje (rhymes with “beige”)\, is the brainchild of vocalist/composers Sara Gazarek\, Amanda Taylor\, Johnaye Kendrick\, and Erin Bentlage. \nBorn out of close friendship and deep admiration\, these world-renowned artists\, composers\, and arrangers have come together to explore\, create\, and celebrate the music that moves them. As individuals\, each artist has crafted their own notable solo career\, and now are delighted to bring their collective voices to this union\, traversing a vast array of compelling original material\, beloved jazz standards\, and contemporary re-imaginings (The Bad Plus\, YEBBA\, Björk\, etc). After debuting an inspiring and energized set at the 2020 Jazz Education Network Conference in New Orleans\, säje went on to tour multiple jazz festivals and clubs from January to March. \nDuring quarantine\, säje received their first GRAMMY® nomination\, for their composition “Desert Song” in the Best Arrangement Instruments and Vocals category. They were awarded the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize Award for their second composition “Wisteria”\, as well as their first Jazz Journalists Association Award Nomination for “Best Vocal Jazz Group”. The collective also recently received gracious support for their continued work through the Chamber Music of America New Jazz Works grant\, the Super Patron Grant\, the Jazz Road Creative Residencies grant\, and the USC Visions + Voices grant. \nTheir highly anticipated debut album was released in August of 2023\, featuring new original work and compelling covers\, highlighting collaborations with artists Jacob Collier\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Ambrose Akinmusire\, and more. The album was received to critical acclaim\, and wide reception\, landing a #2 spot on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart in its first week\, and peaking at #4 on the iTunes Jazz Chart. The union of säje is rooted in the tradition of joy\, curiosity\, lush harmony\, heart-felt expression\, and profound sisterhood. \n

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Summer Series - Shemekia Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning blues\, soul\, and Americana singer Shemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. She is beloved worldwide for the fearlessness\, honesty\, and humor of her revelatory music\, as well as for delivering each song she performs with unmatched passion. Copeland — winner of the 2021 Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year— connects with her audience on an intensely personal level\, taking them with her on what The Wall Street Journal calls “a consequential ride” of “bold and timely blues.” NPR Music says Shemekia sings with “punchy defiance and potent conviction.” The Houston Chronicle describes her songs as “resilient pleas for a kinder tomorrow.” \nCopeland has performed thousands of gigs at clubs\, festivals\, and concert halls all over the world\, and has appeared in films\, on national television\, NPR\, and has been the subject of major feature stories in hundreds of magazines\, newspapers and internet publications. She’s sung with Bonnie Raitt\, Keith Richards\, Carlos Santana\, Dr. John\, James Cotton and many others\, and has shared a bill with The Rolling Stones. She entertained U.S. troops in Iraq and Kuwait in 2008\, a trip she says\, “that opened my eyes to the larger world around me and my place in it.” In 2012\, she performed with B.B. King\, Mick Jagger\, Buddy Guy\, Trombone Shorty\, Gary Clark\, Jr. and others at the White House for President and Mrs. Obama. She has showcased on PBS’s Austin City Limits and was the subject of a six-minute feature on the PBS News Hour. \nOn her new Alligator album\, Done Come Too Far\, Copeland continues the story she began telling on 2018’s groundbreaking America’s Child and 2020’s Grammy-nominated Uncivil War\, reflecting her vision of America’s past\, present and future. \nWith Done Come Too Far\, Copeland hits harder than ever with musically and lyrically adventurous songs and jaw-dropping performances that are at once timely and timeless. The Chicago Tribune’s famed jazz critic Howard Reich said\, “Shemekia Copeland is the greatest female blues vocalist working today. She pushes the genre forward\, confronting racism\, hate\, xenophobia and other perils of our time. Regardless of subject matter\, though\, there’s no mistaking the majesty of Copeland’s instrument\, nor the ferocity of her delivery. Copeland reaffirms the relevance of the blues.

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Winter Series - Lauren Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes: 6:30pm & 8:45pm \nA master of world building\, of tension and release\, Lauren Henderson transforms a song into a dreamlike incantation. She sings with a virtuosic warmth and interprets with intention. Since her arrival on the New York scene in 2009\, the singer and bilingual songwriter has been enchanting audiences across the world. \nThrough every lyric\, she transmits connection and wonder; through every album\, personal discovery.  Henderson’s music reflects a multidisciplinary artistry. Washed with bright\, bold harmonies and ruminative syncopation\, her repertoire features tender ballads\, swinging arrangements\, flamenco dance patterns\, Afro-Caribbean influences\, and heartfelt storytelling. In the softest phrase\, she reveals a passion for the music and its message — in any language. \nRecognized as one of 10 Jazz Artists Blending and Expanding The Sounds Of Latin America by the Recording Academy\, Lauren’s music and artistic contributions are featured on GRAMMY.com. \nIn recent years\, the prolific artist — with familial roots in Panama\, Montserrat\, and different regions of the Caribbean — has completed sold-out tours in Mexico\, France\, Italy\, Spain\, Belgium\, Poland\, South Africa\, and Germany.

SUMMARY:JAS Cafe Winter Series - Jane Monheit Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes: 6:30pm & 8:45pm \nJane Monheit is a jazz and adult contemporary vocalist with a deep passion for the Great American Songbook. With many highly acclaimed solo albums\, countless awards and accolades\, and over two decades of international touring experience\, Jane has not only been an extremely successful bandleader\, but has had the privilege of making music with some of the greatest musicians\, arrangers\, and producers in jazz. \nDuring her childhood\, Jane studied woodwinds and piano\, spent a decade performing in award winning choirs\, and participated in community theater on Long Island. Throughout all of this\, her focus remained on jazz\, especially interpretation of the Songbook. At the age of 20\, during her senior year at the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music\, Jane placed second in the Thelonious Monk Competition\, now known as the Hancock Competition. This led to an incredible career trajectory\, catapulting Jane into the jazz stratosphere nearly overnight. \nBy 22\, Jane was working with legends such as Tommy Flanagan\, Ron Carter\, and Kenny Barron\, recording her first albums\, and touring the planet. This led to collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard\, Ivan Lins\, Tom Harrell\, John Pizzarelli\, Christian McBride\, Vince Mendoza\, Jorge Calandrelli\, and many more. Countless television appearances followed\, including David Letterman\, Conan O’Brien\, CBS Sunday Morning\, Good Morning America\, The Tonight Show\, The View\, and many popular international talk shows. Several successful film soundtracks have also included Jane’s music\, including Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow and Never Let Me Go. \nAfter more than twenty years\, twelve studio albums and countless recorded guest appearances\, Jane has continued to tour the world nearly nonstop\, including playing iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, and headlining at nearly every legendary jazz club on the planet\, most notably NY stalwarts such as the Village Vanguard and Birdland. In addition to touring\, she also writes English lyrics for Ivan Lins\, and uses the knowledge and experience she has gained both at Manhattan School Of Music and on the legendary bandstands of the world to educate and uplift students worldwide. Jane resides in Los Angeles with her husband of over twenty years\, drummer Rick Montalbano\, and their son.
