The 24-year-old multi-instrumentalist was nominated for a GRAMMY in 2020 thanks to his latest album\, Spectacular Class. Through original lyrics written by Willis himself\, the gifted musician delivers a timeless album that features dynamic vocals and all types of blues: Delta\, Piedmont\, Texas\, and Gospel. His stand-out fingerpicking\, flat-picking\, and slide prowess are also on display. \nGRAMMY award-winning artists Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ played an active role in producing Spectacular Class with Taj Mahal credited as Executive Producer and Keb’ Mo’ as the Producer. In addition to its digital release\, the album will also be available on CD and vinyl. \nHailing from Greenville\, Georgia\, Willis grew up singing Gospel music at the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church with his grandfather. Since an early age\, he had the talent and passion for the music and the ability to sharpen his skills fast.  At the age of 14\, he came across a YouTube video of Muddy Waters playing “Hoochie Coochie Man” and was instantly hooked on the blues. \nHe got his much-needed break from the living legend Taj Mahal\, who described him as the “Wonderboy” and “the Wunderkind.” In 2015\, Mahal asked Willis to play on stage with him. That appearance resulted in a roaring response from the audience and led Willis to bigger stages and broader opportunities\, including an opening slot at select shows along the TajMo tour\, featuring his musical mentors Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’. \nMany fans of Willis regard him as an old soul. His style of playing the instruments and his voice touches the very roots of country blues. He brings back the true soul of the music. A newspaper headline once called him a “70-year-old bluesman in a 20-year-old body.” \nSpectacular Class is the follow-up release to his debut album\, Blue Metamorphosis\, which was released in 2016 and garnered him rave reviews from such notable magazines as Living Blues and Blues & Rhythm. In 2018\, the album earned recognition by the Blues Foundation through their International Blues Challenge\, where he was honored with the Best Self-Produced CD Award. \nJontavious Willis [Official Website]

SUMMARY:2023 Winter JAS Cafe: Arkai
DESCRIPTION:Arkai\nJonathan Miron (Violin) & Philip Sheegog (Chelo)\nMarch 10 & 11\, 2023\n7pm & 9:15pm \n@ Here House\n10th: 7pm SOLD OUT\n \n(call 970-920-4996 to join waitlist) \nARKAI channels the diversity of the world through genre-bending music\, forging new possibilities for what a violin and cello can be. Winners of the 2021 Astral Artists National Auditions\, their past engagements have included performances at The MET Breuer\, The Juilliard School\, Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, and the 92nd Street Y. Their electronic debut composition\, “Letters from COVID”\, was featured at TED@PMI for a global audience of over 30\,000 people from 182 countries. ARKAI is represented by Philadelphia-based Astral Artists. \nARKAI was recently commissioned by the Museum of Chinese in America to compose a work for their new exhibition Responses: Asian Americans Resisting the Tides of Racism. Other commissions have included a piece for Silver Lining Ltd’s Impact 5X initiative — a global economic justice project supporting hundreds of small business owners from underserved communities around the world. \nAlongside performing\, ARKAI creates programs in pursuit of a world in which the arts are inseparable from community. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, their initiative SupportNYC has helped raise over $80\,000 in monetary support for small businesses and organizations like the MET Orchestra Musicians\, Harmony Project\, D’Addario Foundation\, and Shakespeare Dallas through fundraising performances\, spreading hope and healing to communities across the country through the power of the arts. ARKAI was recently honored with the 2021 Robert Sherman Music Education and Community Outreach Award presented by WQXR\, The Juilliard School\, and The Harold W. McGraw Family Foundation in recognition of their work through SupportNYC. \nARKAI was selected by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Association of American Voices to participate in the ‘21-22 American Music Abroad season. Through this program\, ARKAI will engage in exchange programs with underserved audiences around the world with little or no access to American music\, demonstrating the power of cultural diplomacy as a tool to bring people together. \nARKAI is currently creating its debut album\, Aurora\, in collaboration with seven-time Grammy-nominated producer Joel Hamilton. \nARKAI Music | Official Website
