After 26 years, nine albums, and over a thousand shows, genre-defying funk band The Motet begins a new chapter with the addition of powerhouse vocalist Sarah Clarke. Long known for their high-energy instrumental interplay and diverse blend of funk, soul, and disco, the Colorado-based group—comprised of Dave Watts (drums), Joey Porter (keys), Garrett Sayers (bass), Drew Sayers (keys/sax), and Ryan Jalbert (guitar)—has officially welcomed Sarah as their new lead vocalist, bringing fresh energy and perspective to their music. Their 2024 album Love Time marks the group’s first full-length release featuring Sarah, signaling an evolution in both sound and spirit.
The collaboration began organically after the band saw Sarah perform with her group Dirty Revival. Invited as a guest on a few shows in 2022, her chemistry with The Motet was undeniable. That connection deepened in the studio, where Sarah’s voice first appeared on the singles “Natural Light” and “We Got U,” paving the way for her full integration into the band and the creation of Love Time. The album came together throughout 2024, written and recorded between Portland and Denver, reflecting the group’s fluid creative process.
The singles from Love Time explore themes both joyful and introspective. Tracks like “Something Better” touch on the anxieties of parenthood and the hope for a brighter world, while “Thinkin Too Much” deals with overthinking and mental health, wrapped in infectious grooves. The title track, “Love Time,” is a playful, dance-ready celebration of attraction and consent, staying true to the band’s signature party-starting vibe. Songs like “Daydream” dive into the surreal, psychedelic side of funk, offering a dreamy escape.
While Love Time showcases a new sound and lyrical depth, The Motet remains rooted in their core mission: creating music that brings people together. From headlining Red Rocks seven times to playing festivals like Bonnaroo and Bottlerock, their live shows have always been central to the experience. As Sarah puts it, “The live show is where it’s at.” With this refreshed lineup and renewed creative spark, The Motet invites fans old and new to join them on the dancefloor—and into the next era of their journey.
