Jazz Aspen Snowmass is partnering with the Nashville Jazz Workshop to provide even more music education opportunities for both JAS In-Schools students as well as our adult audiences. The Nashville Jazz Workshop, founded in 1998, offers a unique approach to jazz education that benefits the entire community. Their Mission is to expand and enrich people’s lives by offering world class jazz education and performance in supportive and creative environments. They accomplish that mission through:
- A workshop environment where jazz professionals pass on their knowledge & experience in a journeyman/apprentice situation
- Classes for players & non-players
- Performances to promote community appreciation of jazz
Through this new collaboration JAS will be introducing audiences to a wide-range of virtual educational and performance opportunities, while also sharing JAS specific content with the Nashville Jazz Workshop, such as the new virtual JAS Listen Up Virtual Artist Interview series and broadcasts of future JAS Café shows and education programs. For more information on the Nashville Jazz Workshop please visit nashvillejazz.org
Below you’ll find info on the two March workshops recommended by JAS & Nashville Jazz Workshop. We hope you’ll join us in participating!
Hammond Heroes
For many years the legacy of the Hammond organ has been lauded by fans and practitioners of improvisational music. During the years 1956-1970, this sound gained new listeners for the music based on the soul and invention of players like Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, Shirley Scott, Larry Young and Dr. Lonnie Smith. We’ll examine these players and more, along with the roots of the sound and what makes the expression popular with many listeners then and now.
