ACCEPTING referrals NOW!!
Jazz Aspen Snowmass is looking for advanced student musicians to participate in the new JAS Street Horns program! Led by Basalt Band Director Chance Davis, alongside JAS In-Schools Director Chris Bank, additional JAS In-Schools Faculty and visiting professional jazz musicians, the Street Horns will be comprised of students referred to JAS by their school Band Directors. JAS is accepting referrals for interested students across the Western Slope of Colorado, with an understanding that some travel will be involved.
REQUIREMENTS: Selected students will be expected to attend at least one rehearsal/performance each month of the year, primarily taking place in the Roaring Fork Valley. Each event will include a group rehearsal followed by a public performance when possible at such events as First Friday’s in Carbondale, special appearances at the JAS Cafe, JAS June Experience, JAS Labor Day Experience and more! Students will also be expected to rehearse on their own time so they are prepared for all group sessions. See a sample rehearsal/performance schedule here.
Additionally, all participants will be invited to join JAS for an exciting spring break trip to New Orleans in the Spring of 2025! They will perform street music in the place it originated, while also visiting some of the local schools and organizations teaching and celebrating this musical heritage.
COST: Participation in the JAS Street Horns is FREE with all expenses*, including the trip to New Orleans, covered by JAS (*with the exception of travel to rehearsals). If students are unable to meet the above requirements they may no longer be able to participate in the band.
REFERRALS: are due by April 1, 2024. Selections will be made by April 15, 2024. Participation commitment will last through May 1, 2025.
PLEASE EMAIL REFERRALS TO jazzaspensnowmass@jazzaspensnowmass.org and include students name, grade, instrument and why you think they would be a good fit for the program.
ABOUT: The Street Horns concept is learning music by utilizing call and response methods to establish horn lines that fit with funky drum lines. Once these lines are absorbed and memorized an arrangement comes together. The objective is to internalize the music and let it flow.
