Matt Schofield: The British Blues Virtuoso Redefining Guitar Greatness
Explore the life, gear, and groove of one of modern blues’ most respected guitarists—how Matt Schofield blends tradition with innovation to create his signature sound.
Matt’s Early Life and Musical Foundations – Born on August 21, 1977, in Manchester, England, Matt Schofield was immersed in blues music from a young age, influenced by his father’s extensive vinyl collection featuring legends like B.B. King and Muddy Waters. At 12, a video showcasing B.B. King, Albert Collins, and Stevie Ray Vaughan profoundly impacted him, steering his passion toward the blues.
His Innovative Trio Format – Schofield’s ensemble, the Matt Schofield Trio, stands out by replacing the traditional bass guitar with a Hammond organ. Organist Jonny Henderson masterfully handles basslines with his left hand while delivering chords and melodies with his right, creating a rich, layered sound.
International Acclaim and Collaborations – Recognized as one of the top ten British blues guitarists by Guitar & Bass Magazine, Schofield’s talent has led him to perform in over a dozen countries and share stages with icons like Buddy Guy and Robben Ford. Notably, he’s one of only two living British artists to receive a four-star rating in the Penguin Book of Blues Recordings.
Awards and Honors – Schofield’s album “Heads, Tails & Aces” earned the British Blues Award for Album of the Year in 2010. He was also inducted into the British Blues Awards Hall of Fame after clinching the Guitarist of the Year title three consecutive times from 2010 to 2012.
Diverse Musical Influences – His guitar style seamlessly blends blues, jazz, and funk, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of artists, including B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Robben Ford, and Billy Gibbons. This fusion results in a unique sound that appeals to a broad audience.
Signature Gear – Schofield’s distinctive tone is supported by custom equipment:
- Guitars: Primarily uses SVL Custom guitars, modeled after his cherished 1961 Fender Stratocaster.
- Amplifiers: Collaborated with Two-Rock Amplification to create the Schofield Signature amplifier, which he describes as “simply the best amplifier I’ve ever plugged into.”
- Effects Pedals: Utilizes a range of effects, including the Free The Tone MS SOV SPECIAL overdrive pedal, developed specifically for him.
