Over 50 of the top student jazz musicians from the Western Slope gathered in Carbondale Feb. 3-4 to participate in the JAS District 8 Honor Jazz Band. Broken into three groups, the students rehearsed together under JAS Faculty for only two days prior to their big performance at Carbondale Middle School that Saturday evening. The show started with the Street Horns, marching through the audience to the stage in full New Orleans mode. Following performances by two more amazing ensembles, the entire group of students came together for the closing piece, appropriately chosen “Hit the Road Jack.”
Honor Jazz students are selected to audition by their school music instructors, then chosen for the program by JAS Instructors. This year included students from 11 different schools.
